Abstract

sport has been intertwined with government in the People's Republic of China since the Communist Party took power in 1949. It serves best as a subculture, fitting into the scope of socialism. In this paper, the author investigates whether China can become a super sport power in the world. This is done by examining sport ideology, governmental structure, sport history, integrated education, mass sports, and competitive sports from the ascendancy of Mao's leadership to the post-Mao leadership under Den, and to analyze historically and sociologically the interdependence of sport, physical culture, Chinese culture, and politics. In addition, the author's experience in the system for twenty-five years highlights the investigation.
