Abstract
AbstractThis chapter assesses the state of knowledge about political executives in non-democratic regimes. The chapter starts by examining what distinguishes executives in non-democracies from those in democracies, as well as how executives in non-democratic regimes vary from one another other. It then turns to the key questions and findings in this field, including how authoritarian governments maintain power and ensure regime stability and how executive coalitions affect policy outcomes. The third section lays out some avenues for future research, including further exploration of the formal organization of authoritarian executives, intra-executive politics, and the decision-making processes in non-democratic regimes.
