Abstract

This paper sets out to explore the normative foundations of political public relations in the Republic of Poland. It is assumed that the transformation from the former communist regime to democracy has led to specific constraints and conflict constellations in the Polish political communication system which, in turn, shapes actors’ perceptions of today’s political public relations. Using data from qualitative elite interviews, the empirical reconstruction of the perception of political public relations is realized by investigating the role self-perceptions of Polish political spokespeople, their goals and tools as well as perceived constraints of their work. Due to the commercialization of the Polish media system, the interviewees expect a further professionalization of political public relations in the coming years.
