Abstract
Purism is a phenomenon which has frequently been seen as foreign to the Polish language. However, around 1900, several authors, concerned by what they saw as growing irregularities and dialectal splitting in Polish, engaged in puristic activities in an effort to promote the unity and standardization of Polish. One of the most comprehensive of these efforts was undertaken by the journalist Aleksander Łętowski, whose book on the 'errors' of Lithuanian Polish is at the same time a compendium of the peculiarities of the Lithuanian Polish dialect, a prescriptive work, and a book offering insights into the mind of the purist.
