Abstract

The images of the past conveyed in Polish films have often had a significant impact on the public perception of history. Referring to selected Polish feature films, the author looks at several issues related to their treatment as public history: the impact of cinema on the historical awareness of Poles, the relationship between films and the expectations and competences of the audiences, the introduction by historical movies of certain themes and points of view into the public discourse, the presence of historical films in Polish public disputes and debates, as well as the activities of historical and film educators.
