Abstract

n October of 2013 the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control raised the alarm about the possibility of the reintroduction of the polio virus in the European Region: Syria, a country absent poliomyelitis cases since 1995, presented new cases due to the deterioration of the health conditions during the internal armed conflicts. This situation brought about the reappearance of the wild poliovirus type 1 in Israel, which as qualified in the scientific literature as a “silent reintroduction”.
