Abstract
The aim of this article is to examine the practical role that regional government and local economics might play in development, tackling this problem in the UK context. In doing this, the article both illustrates the perhaps uniquely entrenched nature of regional disparities in the UK and high-lights the limits of purely regional' solutions. In addition, advocates of regional' solutions regularly invoke the experience of other countries as a guide to what should be possible in the UK. It briefly investigates the role of the federal political system in Germany in relation to economic development. -from Authors
