Abstract

Energy supply and consumption have contributed to local environmental problems in the Pacific Island region. With respect to environmental management in the region, development of renewable energy systems could be an important strategy. However, renewable energy systems have received little attention. In this paper, we analyse possible solutions for developing renewable energy in the Pacific Island region from policy perspectives. We believe that implementing national energy policies in favour of renewable energy, furthering development of renewable energy via international aid, and providing sufficient capital resources and technical assistance will greatly enhance renewable energy systems. With respect to financial assistance, technical support, human resources and institutional development, the involvement of local people and joint ventures between donor countries and the Pacific Island nations are recommended as policy formulation and implementation measures.
