Abstract

Organizational life is subject to both public policies, such as the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act and the Family and Medical Leave Act and private policies. The enactment of various policies in organizational settings can often be challenging for organizational members to understand because of the complex nature of such policies. Heather Canary, S. E. Riforgiate and Y. J. Montoya developed a 21-item, five-factor survey instrument to measure policy communication within organizations to fully understand organizational members’ policy communication practices. The survey instrument includes five subscales through which organizational members may experience policy communication within their organizations: meeting discussions, human resources communication, coworker conversations, supervisor/coworker instructions and personal expressions. Reliability information for the composite scale and the five subscales demonstrated that the Policy Communication Index (PCI) is a fairly consistent and reliable measure. The composite PCI was significantly and positively correlated with policy knowledge and attitude.
