Abstract
Esta investigación tiene la finalidad determinar la técnica y los materiales empleados en la policromía original de las yeserías de las galerías bajas del Patio de las Doncellas. Este emplazamiento forma parte de las construcciones realizadas por Pedro I (1356-1366) en el conjunto monumental del Alcázar de Sevilla, cuya importancia como ciudad palatina determinó su inclusión en la lista del Patrimonio Mundial de la UNESCO en el año 1987 junto a la Catedral y el Archivo de Indias. Su condición como residencia permanente de los monarcas españoles ha favorecido su conservación, pero también que haya sido muy intervenido desde su construcción. Esta sucesión de intervenciones es especialmente visible en las yeserías de dicho patio donde se distinguen repolicromados y encalados sucesivos que ocultan la delicadeza del relieve y los restos del color original, ofreciendo en la actualidad un aspecto grisáceo bastante lejano al del momento de su ejecución en el s. XIV en el que predominaba el color. Tras una pormenorizada revisión documental y un minucioso estudio de campo, se acometió la toma de micromuestras para estudiarlas mediante técnicas analíticas de estudio del Patrimonio Cultural -microscopía estereoscópica, microscopia óptica, microscopía electrónica de barrido (SEM/EDX), difracción de rayos X (XRD), espectroscopía infrarroja por transformada de Fourier (FTIR) o cromatografía gaseosa entre otras (GC-MS)- a partir de las cuales poder identificar las características del mortero, la composición de la capa pictórica y el aglutinante empleado, determinándose de esta manera la existencia de restos de policromía original.

Summary
This paper presents a study of the gypsum plasterwork of the Courtyard of the Maidens, in the Royal Alcazar of Seville, focusing the attention in the knowledge of its original polychrome decorations. The importance of the palatial city determined its inclusion in the World Heritage List of UNESCO in 1987, along with the Cathedral and the India’s Archive His status as permanent residence of the Spanish monarchs has allowed its preservation over the time. After an exhaustive revision of the bibliographical documentation and a thorough field study, the method continued with the collection of microsamples for their analysis with instrumental techniques for Cultural Heritage -among which we could highlight the stereoscopic microscopy, the polarizing optical microscopy, the scanning electron microscopy with X-ray microanalysis (SEM/EDX), the X-ray diffraction (XRD), the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and the gas chromatography (GC-MS) These techniques made it possible to identify the mortar composition, the characteristics of the pictorial layer and the binding media used; determining the existence of remains from the original polychrome, as well as the procedures for its execution
