Abstract

This chapter explores how police officers from South Africa view community policing (COP). While the introduction of COP in South Africa was mainly the product of political and legal endeavors, the success of its actual implementation depends largely on how police officers on the ground view COP. In this chapter, we explore the support for community policing among a sample of 757 SAPS police officers surveyed between 2010 and 2013. Our results demonstrate that the respondents’ personal desire to be included as part of COP is one of the key variables explaining their overall support for COP. Police officers in our study whose current assignment was COP, who were actively involved in COP projects, and who took a course of COP, expressed more positive views on COP than their counterparts. There is a significant interaction between support for traditional policing practices and police accountability on support for community policing.
