Abstract

For the three-stage synchronous starter/generator, the pole ratio studied here is defined as the pole number of the main generator (MG) to that of the main exciter (ME) ratio and the operation mode means the operation mode of the rectifier at rated load in the generating mode. In this study, the pole ratio and the operation mode influence on the excitation system (consisting of the ME and the rotating rectifier) when the MG is short-circuited has been analysed. Simulation results show that, instead of pole ratio, the operation mode of the rectifier has much more to do with minimising current shock to the excitation system when the MG is short-circuited in the generation mode. Further, it's better to design the ME and MG to make the rectifier operate at mode 2 or 3 to reduce current shock.
