Abstract
By stimulating the nonlinear evolution of the polarization of short pulses in birefringent fibers, we observe a spatial instability in the polarization of soliton-like pulses against small changes in the soliton peak power. This leads to soliton power induced branching into orthogonal polarization modes. A comparison with an analogous self-switching phenomenon which occurs in a dual-core fiber nonlinear directional coupler leads to a discussion of the effects of cross-phase modulation.
