Abstract

Polarized Raman scattering from single crystals can provide definitive evidence for assigning symmetry species to vibrational modes.1 Unfortunately, reflection from crystal faces and surface imperfections scrambles the polarization of the scattered radiation. Reflection problems can be avoided for large crystals by polishing the crystal surfaces. For small crystals this is not possible. Consequently, studies of small crystals have generally utilized 180° viewing, which minimizes reflection problems.1 A simple and inexpensive technique for studying the polarization of Raman scattering (90° viewing) from small single crystals is presented here.
