Abstract

The SPIN collaboration has been studying the acceleration of a polarized proton beam in the Fermilab Main Injector and Tevatron. A report which briefly describes some physics goals for a polarized proton beam near 120 GeV and 1 TeV was delivered to the Fermilab Directorate in June, 1995. This paper is a very brief synopsis of that report and contains an estimate of the schedule for the Polarized Main Injector and Tevatron projects. The report describes in some detail the hardware and commissioning procedures needed to accelerate polarized protons in the Main Injector and the Tevatron and to perform polarized proton experiments; some highlights are: • Nine Siberia snakes and some other minor hardware should allow 75% polarization to be maintained and manipulated in the Booster, Main Injector, and Tevatron. • Recent progress in atomic beam and optically pumped polarized ion sources (0.5 mA and 1.6 mA) should allow a . R&D is being supported for both source types. The source’s three‐year fabrication time makes it a critical‐path item. • If the proposed Recycler Ring is constructed in the Main Injector tunnel enclosure, it could be used to stack and cool polarized protons and thereby achieve the same luminosity as with unpolarized protons. • A decision is required very soon to install polarized hardware during the February 1998–February 1999 Main Injector installation shutdown. • Twenty new 6 T superconducting dipoles would replace thirty‐six existing 4.4 T Tevatron ring dipoles to make empty spaces in the Tevatron for six Siberian snakes and four Collider‐detector spin rotators.
