Abstract

The guided propagation of polarized neutrons in multilayer magnetic thin-film structures is proposed and investigated. The spin dependence of the refractive index in magnetic thin films leads to two different propagation constants of guided neutrons with spins parallel and antiparallel to the magnetic moment of the guiding film. The measurements of these split propagation constants by the neutron reflectometry technique allows us to determine directly the magnetic moment of thin films.
