Abstract

We have investigated molecular orientation and structure of the ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) with a naphthalene ring in the chiral smectic-C (SmC*) phase by using polarized infrared spectroscopy. Two-dimensional (2D) correlation spectroscopy has been applied to analyze the polarization angle dependence of band intensity changes. The 2D correlation analysis has revealed that not only two carbonyl groups but also benzene and naphthalene rings undergo hindered rotation about the molecular long axis.
