Abstract

Physics with the Large Electron Positron Storage Ring under study at CERN would derive much benefit if polarized beams could be stored. Hitherto, the depolarizing effects of spin resonances seemed to excluded this possibility. The ’’Siberian Snake’’ proposed by the Novosibirsk group indicates a way of avoiding these resonances and offers some hope of maintaining polarized e± beams over at least part of the interesting energy range of LEP. The implementation of such a scheme has important consequences on the theoretical, technological and financial aspects of the LEP design.
