Abstract

Polarization and virtual mass are dual, electrostatic, and hydrodynamical, physical quantities calculated for a given solid body by means of the appropriate exterior potential fields. Analogous physical quantities can be derived from appropriate exterior elastostatic fields. We establish some new isoperimetric inequalities, which each bound a physical quantity in terms of geometrical parameters of an arbitrarily shaped body, and convert to an exact calculation for a particular shape.
