Abstract

The mode polarization of some He-Ne-lasers with internal mirrors has been investigated. Contrary to earlier reports, we found that many lasers oscillating in three modes had two adjacent modes polarized in the same direction. The effect is explained by a combination of anisotropy and mode competition. This theory is supported by experiments where magnetic fields were used to change the polarization direction. The cause of polarization flips in such laser is also discussed.
