Abstract

Symmetry forbidden scattering peaks appear in the Brillouin spectra of KBr-KCN alloys in the presence of a uniaxial stress. This may be explained as a stress-induced birefringence altering the polarization state of the scattered light. There are no observable changes in phonon frequency and linewidth induced by such a stress.
