Abstract

Abstract Exact series expressions are obtained for the longitudinal and transverse polarizabilities of a system of two conducting spheres, for arbitrary sphere radii and separation. In the important case of close approach, where the exact series converge slowly, approximate analytical expressions are obtained. These analytical expressions become more accurate as the distance between the spheres gets small compared to the sphere radii, and reduce to the known analytic values at sphere contact.
