Abstract

Negative and positive polarity items are words and expressions that either require or shun negative contexts. The notion of negative context can be defined in a number of ways, and various classes of negative polarity items appear to be sensitive to these differences. Four types of negative polarity items are distinguished and some general asymmetries between negative and positive polarity items are discussed.
