Abstract An attempt is made to reveal the polarity-dependent heliolatitudinal gradient of galactic cosmic rays predicted by drift models. The 7°.5 excursion of Earth from the helioequator results in opposite yearly intensity waves in the inward and outward interplanetary magnetic sectors. Data from the Nagoya ground level vertical cosmic-ray telescope are analysed for the period of 1974 - 1982. Evidence is presented in favor of a gradient rising away from the neutral sheet in the epoch of 1974 - 1979. The results obtained for 1980 - 1982 remain inconclusive.
