Abstract

Summary The responsive zone for organogenesis and the time for organ induction in melon cotyledons were investigated. Callus proliferation and root or shoot formation was only confined to the basal side of the cotyledon or its segments. Organ induction required at least 1 day but not more than 3 for roots and 3 days but not more then 5 for shoots. Responsiveness was apparently achieved by the transverse cut and the accumulation of a polarly transported endogenous growth factor (IAA). Exogenous hormones then induced organ formation.
