Abstract

Polar lobe formation by embryos of the marine snail Ilyanassa was prevented by the microfilament disrupting agent, cytochalasin B. Colchicine and vinblastine, which disrupt microtubules, had no effect on polar lobe formation, but prevented resorption of lobes. None of these drugs affected protein synthesis. Emetine, which abolished protein synthesis, did not prevent formation or resorption of lobes, though it delayed these processes somewhat and eventually caused arrest of embryonic development.
