Abstract

Measurements of ionospheric electric fields in the northern polar cap are reported for a nearly uninterrupted period of ∼8 days. The fields were measured by balloon-borne sensors. A clear modulation of the electric field strength as a function of the earth position within interplanetary sectors is observed. The field strength rises sharply after passage of a sector boundary and declines steadily in the trailing portion of the sector.
