Abstract

In the summer of 1992, I spent mid-july to mid-August in Poland, and talked with many persons of varying employments. I knew some of them from prior visits in 1979 and 1985, and most conversations were carried on in Polish, with my Polish-born wife as translator. I am convinced that my impressions are representative of the situation and are generally indicative of Eastern Europe. A colleague who spent three months last spring in Russia commented that my observations remind him very much of his own experiences, except for the abortion issue, which is not a focus of conflict in Russia.
