Abstract

Although Poland’s ruling conservative nationalist PiS (Law and Justice) party achieved an impressive result in October’s parliamentary election, it now faces a better organised and more diverse opposition, the loss of the upper house and a newly emerged rival further to its right. PiS is likely to retain the presidency in next year’s election, although it could conceivably be unseated by a strong candidate who united the mainstream opposition vote.
