Abstract

Poisons can be grouped in various ways including plant, animal, and bacterial poisons and drugs. Among plant poisons are: colchicum seeds, atropine (belladonna) , aconite, strychnine, opium and morphine, cyanide (and potassium cyanide and prussic acid), digitalis, nicotine, hyoscine. Among animal derived poisons are cantharides and insulin. Bacterial poisons include: typhoid, tuberculosis, and diphtheria. Drugs can be potentially poisonous for example: fentanyl, methylphenobarbitone, Seconal sodium, succinylcholine chloride, and Vecuronium bromide are examples. For each of these poisons, a case or cases can be referenced in which the poison was used for homicide.
