Abstract

This is a description of a 14-year analysis, which was followed by the periodic return of the patient. The “poison cookie” episode occurred during the early phase of the analysis when the patient and analyst were contending with this patient's intense ambivalence and her difficulties with self-regulation. The patient's offer of a cookie to the analyst evoked fantasies in the analyst related to the intensity of the ambivalence arising in the treatment. The initial analysis included a termination phase during which there was an integration of this intense ambivalence. The analyst asks the discussants for their understanding of the patient's periodic sessions that have occurred since the termination phase.
