Abstract

In 1 879, the beginning of the agricultural crisis led the government to ask the French National Agricultural Society to carry out a survey on the situation of agriculture in France in the year 1879. One of the questions of the survey concerned the customs regulations of farming products. The answers, which came from fifty-five « départements », that is to say the major farming areas of the time, were provided by the correspondents of the Society, most of them experienced farmers, still at work and having responsibilities within the agricultural world. Their answers enable us to define the views of the agricultural world as regards customs regulations. In the early 1880s, the majority of farmers were in favour of a return to a fairly moderate type of protectionism.
