Abstract

Walton's question is an extremely interesting one, re-opening the centuries-old debate over ut pictura poesis. Yet, for reasons I shall attempt to demonstrate in the present context, his conclusion appears too strong. As we shall see, there are clear cases of mediation in the visual arts. A convenient point of departure for our own discussion is Walton's definition of the literary fictive narrator:
