Abstract

Abstract Several hundred drafts and 95 unpublished poems of the Austrian author Ilse Aichinger (born in 1921) are stored in the German Archive for Literature in Marbach (Deutsches Literaturarchiv Marbach). Analysing the work process, Aichinger’s revisions of her poems show some striking characteristics. Viewed as a whole, they allow inferences regarding the author’s poetic principals. The essay demonstrates these connections by the analysis of textual variants in Aichinger’s drafts - focusing on modifications influencing the sound pattern, on variants in the development of metaphors, and on revisions concerning private dedications in her poetry. Combined, they show a poetry that distrusts meaning in and through language, and a poetic structure that hinders comprehensibility at least to some extent while putting emphasis on the sound of language.
