Abstract
The five epithets of χεíρ studied here are seen to fall into two distinct groups: παχ৹σ and στιβαρóσ are used of the hand in action, while βαρ৹σ, θρασ৹σ, and άαπτōσ are emotionally laden, and denote the hand primarily as a harmful instrument. The metrically equivalent formulae χειρİ παχεíη and χειρİ βαρεíη are thus not duplicate formulae, but serve different purposes. Modifications of standard formulae with χεíρ are also discussed.
