Abstract
Marcel Duchamp-the sign of a coherent system, and not the index of a mansignifies an ego both internally split and externally doubled, an ego that is the very process of instituting its own sign system while contesting the codes of everyday language from which that system is derived. In the notes for Duchamp's masterpiece, The Large Glass La mariee mise a nu par ses celibataires, meme (The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors, Even)-there is to be found a small diagram indicating the main iconographic axis of the Glass's arcane symbolic system. This diagram marks the difference between the top and bottom panels of the Glass as sexual difference itself:
