Abstract

Podospora anserina is a coprophilous ascomycete fungus that has been used as a model organism since the 1930s. It has been reported from numerous types of herbivore dung globally, but recent genetic analyses have determined that P. anserina is a member of a species complex. It is an obligate sexual species capable of self-fertilization, completing its lifecycle in ∼10 days under laboratory conditions. It has served as the basis for numerous discoveries, including new types of selfish genetic elements (Spoks and Starships), senescence plasmids, and prions.
