Abstract

AbstractThis chapter focuses on the different methods used for the production of podophyllotoxin and related lignans by plant in vitro cell cultures and discusses its contribution to development of plant-based pharmaceutical products. Lignan production in Podophyllum and Linum species is emphasized. It also highlights the potential of genetically transformed, hairy root cultures in the stable and continuous production of lignans under in vitro conditions.
