Abstract

Environmental considerations, market demands, and government legislation are forcing the pulp and paper industry to reduce its impact on the environment. Closed-cycle mills are a major step in this direction. Closed cycle may also provide a durable solution to future environmental standards. A closed-cycle mill would produce a recyclable product from a renewable resource and directly addresses issues related to water toxicity and water use. The closed-cycle mill could represent a significant step toward addressing public concerns and result in significant competitive advantages for the industry. Several mills in the world are pursuing closed cycle. Complete closure appears to be more difficult to achieve, and most mills have found that operations can be sustained only under partially closed conditions. This chapter reviews the advances in purification and recycling of process water in kraft mills, sulfite mills, mechanical pulp mills, and recycled fiber mills.
