Abstract

Glossopharyngeal nerve block has been described for patients with cancer of the throat or other painful conditions arising in the innervation of the glossopharyngeal nerve. The technique of Ultrasound guided glossopharyngeal nerve block for cancer pain was first described by the author in 19893 and was reported most recently in 2019 by Liu eta al 4 who used it for glossopharyngeal neuralgia in 12 patients with excellent results. The standard described technique for delivering the stimulation over the carotid artery will also stimulate the glossopharyngeal nerve as it moves anteriorly just below the Styloid process ( Figure 1)( Figure 2).Our thesis was that we would be providing peripheral nerve stimulation to the glossopharyngeal nerve as well as the vagus nerve.
