Abstract

In PD patients, the most beneficial effect on motor symptoms can be achieved with the use of bilateral subthalamic nucleus DBS (DBS STN), which also significantly improves quality of life. The favourable effect of DBS STN on quality of life has been proven in multicentre randomised trials, but there is no clear evidence of its influential effect on the disease progression in PD in humans. Therefore the aim of the study was to evaluate the possible alterations in disease progression in patients with advanced stage PD, who underwent bilateral DBS STN, in comparison to PD patients treated with best medical therapy.
