Abstract

Purpose: This is a multi-institutional report on inter-observer and inter-instrument variation in the calibration of a planar 32P beta emitting brachytherapy source. Calibration accuracy is essential since the dose profile is steep and the source is used for the treatment of tumors that are located in close proximity to healthy nervous system structures. Due to its steep dose gradient, the calibration of the 32P source is non-trivial and particularly sensitive to the detector's effective point of measurement and/or variations in measurement material densities.
