Abstract

As 70% of spinal cord injuries (SCI) are anatomically incomplete, partial motor recovery may occur. Unfortunately, recovery is rarely satisfactory and multiple life-long deficits persist. We developed a neuroprosthesis whereby electrical microstimulation was delivered to the motor cortex during ongoing locomotion to improve the execution and training of voluntary movements. When the animal attempts to perform a movement, the electrode micro-stimulates the motor cortex at the right time and place, increasing motor commands and maximizing movement exactly when required.
