Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the association between men’s sexual self-concept and erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation and low sexual desire. The study population consists of 45-year old men who were sampled during the first two years of the German Male Sex-Study (April 2014 – April 2016). Subjects underwent a short interview and a brief physical examination conducted by a physician and filled out questionnaires including questions about sexual self-concept and sexual dysfunctions. Four aspects of self-concept were investigated: body image (three items from the Dresden Body Image Inventory), understanding of masculinity (three items from the Male Role Norm Scale), perceived social pressure with regard to sexual performance, and sexual self-esteem (four/three newly designed items). All items were rated on a 5-point Likert-scale. Erectile function was assessed using the IIEF-EF, premature ejaculation using the Sexual complaints screener. One question evaluated sexual desire. Wilcoxon and Kruskal-Wallis tests were conducted.
