Abstract

To identify prevention strategies to decrease burnout syndrome in nursing personnel in times of pandemic COVID-19 on existing evidence. The present study is a literature review conducted between August and September 2020, using databases: PubMed, Scielo, Elsevier, Medline and Cinahl, applying the search engines: ["burnout syndrome "], ["nurs* "], ["pandemic "], ["covid 19 "], ["stress "], ["management "], with the operators boleanos AND, OR. Articles published during the year 2020 in English and Spanish were searched. Theses and conference abstracts were excluded. For the collection and analysis of the information, it was used as a spreadsheet. From a total of 626 articles, 17 articles were selected according to the methodological quality. The selected articles present preventive measures for the Burnout Syndrome, classified in two categories: First: they are the Organizational Strategies, which are subdivided into 9 aspects: 1) mental and physical health, 2) work environment, 3) teamwork, 4) work shift, 5) support groups, 6) online assistance, 7) training, 8) structure/operation and 9) health policies. Second, there are Personal Strategies, focused on 1) communication, 2) self-care and 3) stress management techniques. Organizational measures are currently of greater interest, with mental and physical health standing out, while in personal measures, communication was the most relevant. It is suggested to incorporate programs focused on mental health, to ensure that the institutions have the necessary resources to face the crises and to promote a constant communication in favor of the decrease of the burnout syndrome. The preventive strategies for burnout syndrome, which are revealed by the evidence, promote the application and deepening of these measures in the current and future health crises, in benefit of the labor welfare of nurses in the world.
