Abstract

This work report the preparation of environmental-responsive hollow poly(N-isopropylacrylamide)(PNIPAM) microspheres through an improved self-removing template method. The influences of different process parameters including the addition amount of MAA,the content of surfactant sodium dodecyl sulfate(SDS) and dialysis time on the final morphology of hollow microspheres were studied using transmission electron microscopy(TEM).The results showed that the formation rate of the cavity of hollow PNIPAM microspheres was determined by the addition amount of MAA,and the diameters and internal cavity sizes of hollow PNIPAM microspheres were obviously affected by addition amounts of MAA and SDS.When the addition amount of MAA increased from 1.06 to 4.24 mmol/L,the average diameter of hollow microspheres increased from about 250 to 450 nm,meantime, the size of internal cavity increased from 40 to 270 nm.However, with the addition of SDS ranging from 0 to 0.62 mmol/L,the average diameter and the cavity size of hollow microspheres reduced from 450 and 270 nm to 320 and 270 nm,respectively. The results of ultraviolet-visible(UV-vis) spectroscopy and dynamic light scattering(DLS) indicated that these hollow PNIPAM microspheres exhibit pH-dependent thermo-responsive property.
