Abstract

This paper evaluates the efficiency of different PNG optimization techniques applied to lossless images with characteristics of those typically found in the World Wide Web. The processed samples consist of PNG and GIF images collected from the Internet, based on access logs generated from web navigation. The optimization techniques were applied cumulatively and each step was analysed. The resulting file size statistics show individual benefits of each technique and, when applied simultaneously, better PNG compression in the majority of cases.
