Abstract

Abstract Abdominal pain is a common cause of emergency admission in children. Although often due to appendicitis and other intra-abdominal causes, extra-abdominal conditions, especially pneumonia, can simulate an acute abdominal catastrophe. Accurate and prompt diagnosis is essential, not only to avoid general anaesthesia and a negative laparotomy in the presence of pneumonia but also to start antibiotic therapy early so as to prevent the complications of pneumonia.
