Abstract

Pneumocystis carinii is a common pathogen among immunocompromised patients. The organism was originally classified as a protozoan until recent studies revealed more characteristics of a fungus. P. carinii is difficult to study because of the absence of an in vitro culture system. Trimethoprim-sulfamethaxozole is considered the drug of choice for P. carinii in adults and adolescents, including pregnant patients. P. carinii pneumonia (PCP) remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with human immunodeficiency virus infection. Even with the use of prophylaxis against P. carinii, PCP causes more deaths among patients with AIDS than does any other infectious disease process in the United States.
