Abstract

Pneumococcus (Streptococcus pneumoniae) is the most common cause of acute respiratory and ear infections. Worldwide, more than 3 million children die every year from pneumococcus-triggered pneumonia, bacteraemia or meningitis. The Institute for Genomic Research (TIGR, Rockville, MD, USA) have announced the complete genome sequence of a highly virulent isolate of S. pneumoniae. Herve Tettelin led the team on TIGR's 26th genome sequencing project, which revealed 2326 genes (Science, 20 July and http://www.tigr.org/index.shtml). DM
